Academic Tests
Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) - Iowa students take the ITBS each year from kindergarten through eighth grade. They are tested each year in reading, writing, math and science. The results are compared to state standards and are used to assess student progress and rank school districts.
Iowa Tests of Educational Development (ITED) - High school students in Iowa must take the ITED. The tests cover reading, writing, math and science. The majority of the questions are multiple-choice. The test results are used to determine student progress as compared to state standards.

Iowa Real Estate Agents Tests and Licensing - Real estate agents in Iowa must take a licensing examination after they complete the required pre-licensing coursework. The test is taken on a computer and is delivered by a third party. Applicants have three hours to complete the 120 multiple-choice questions. The test is closed book.
Iowa Cosmetologists Tests and Licensing - Cosmetologists in Iowa are required to take an exam before they can be licensed. The computer-based test consists of theoretical questions on the practice of cosmetology. The test is in multiple-choice format. Applicants have 90 minutes to take the test and must score 75 percent or higher. The fee is $55.
Iowa Real Estate Appraisers Exams and Licensure - Iowa requires all real estate appraisers to pass a licensing exam. The exam must be taken after they have met their education and work experience requirements. The exam is six hours long and has 150 questions, all of which are multiple-choice. The fee to take the exam is $145. Applicants must make an appointment two days in advance.
Iowa Barber Tests and Licensing - Barbers have to pass both a practical and a theoretical licensing exam. The theoretical exam is a computer-based multiple-choice test and costs $55. The practical exam tests a student's abilities. The fee for the practical is $75 and candidates must bring their own supplies.
Iowa Electrician Tests and Licensure - The Iowa Electrical Examining Board requires all electricians to pass a licensing exam before working in the state. The test varies in number of questions and content by rank, but all tests are multiple-choice and open book. Candidates must bring their own reference materials. A passing score is 75 percent.
Driver's Tests
Iowa Driving Tests - Iowa requires all new drivers to pass three tests. They must take a written test, a vision test and a driving test. Minors must also go through a Graduated Drivers Licensing program. New residents with a valid out-of-state license are exempted from all tests but the vision exam.
Iowa Commercial Driving Tests - Applicants for a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must pass a general CDL knowledge exam and a separate knowledge exam for each class of vehicle and endorsement they are applying for. In addition, they have to pass a road skills test. The test includes the required pre-trip inspection, basic control of the vehicle and an on-road demonstration.
Iowa Motorcycle Tests - Drivers who wish to get an Iowa motorcycle license must first pass a vision test, a knowledge test and a driving test. The latter is waived if they complete a Motorcycle Rider Education (MRE) Program.
