Utah Electrician Exam
Need of a License: Master and journeyman electricians need a license to work in Utah.
Who Grants a License: Electrician licenses are granted by the Utah Department of Commerce.
Qualifications Needed to Receive a License
Master Electrician: A candidate must have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering and one year of practical experience as a licensed apprentice electrician OR an associate of applied sciences degree and 2 years’ practical experience as a licensed journeyman electrician OR a certificate of completion from an approved trade school and 4 years’ practical experience as a licensed journeyman electrician.
Journeyman Electrician: A candidate must have 4 years’ experience as a registered apprentice or 8 years’ practical experience.
Exam Requirements: A candidate for a master electrician license or a journeyman electrician license must pass the Master Electrician Examination or the Journeyman Electrician Examination, respectively.

Test Content
Master Electrician Exam - The electrical contractor exam consists of 80 questions on code with a time limit of 180 minutes, 50 questions on theory with a time limit of 100 minutes, and a practical exam of 7 items with a time limit of 120 minutes. A candidate needs at least a 75% grade to pass.

Journeyman Electrician Exam - The journeyman exam consists of 50 questions on theory with a time limit of 100 minutes and a practical exam of 5 items with a time limit of 90 minutes. A candidate needs at least a 75% grade to pass.

License Renewal Requirements: A licensed electrician needs a minimum of 16 hours of continuing education every two years. Licenses must be renewed by November 30th of even-numbered years.
